THIS IS GOLD:WWII Armor Penetration Ballistics Calculator

WOW, while working on the technics.ini, I stumbled upon something that illustrates very well why seting up a effective range for AP guns is so difficult:

This may be interesting to "calibrate" the tables in the technics.ini .

That is a sensational tool. I would love to see the algorithm behind it.

Unfortunately the contact form doesn´t work, so no questions possible.

Reading further I see this guy is one of us. :D

On his WWII Nations Dev Blog he is explaining the development of a WW2 strategy game:

Maybe we should get in contact with him?

Ok contacted him:

biggest congratulations to your WWII-Equipment website and WWII Nations strategy development!!!
It´s hard to find a website with such detailed information.

The Ballistic AP Calculator is putting out information that is very hard to find anywhere else.
I wonder if there is a offline version available or what algorythm you used to make that tool?

Maybe you are also interested who I am/"we are".
The Scorched Earth Online War(SEOW) Community http://seowhq.net is a community running a free and persistent coop campaign system based on the IL-2 series of flight simulations.
If you would like to know more, please read here for more information:

Basically we are a group of people with great interest in WW2 warfare, trying to simulate different situations on a strategical and tactical level.

When I stumbled upon your website I realized we have same interest.
I wonder if you may be interested in exchanging ideas and creating certain synergies between SEOW and your projects.

Many thanks for your great work and also thanks in advance for your answer.

I got mail.

He says he used play IL-2 himself and finds the SEOW very interesting.

The calculator is a web app so unfortunately there isn't an offline version, but he'd be more than happy to take a look to see if there is anything that can be done to make it more suitable for us, if we tell him what we need in detail.

He would be very interested in some feedback or suggestions WWII-Nations.

He'd be glad to share ideas with us.

I do not know if he will register here.

Hi Emil,

I am currently travelling so my access is limited.

I'd like to see that tool display a link to a data file that contains the kill probability data, that is the data that produces those lovely "flower" diagrams.

The tool calculates that data, so perhaps it is not too hard to just write the data to a text file and provide a link for download.

Why do I want that data? Well I basically want to be able to generate "effective kill" range parameters that average over the possible attack angles in certain ways.

Alternatively, I could provide a small set of simple averaging formulae that could be used and displayed directly on the form, e.g. "SEOW Engagement Range" or "HSFX Range" or similar.

In the IL-2 context, each tank/gun has its own attack range. In reality this depended on the type of target. That is a 45mm ATG would open fire at long range against a soft target, but only short range against a Tiger (if at all). We cannot set different attack ranges depending on target type in IL-2, but a diligent campaign designer can consider effective ranges for each gun against the enemy unit types in the campaign template, and determine an effective range for each gun that suits the campaign. The web tool above could provide useful historical/physical data upon which to base this analysis.

Cheers,
